Treatment of Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a serious sleeping disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. When left untreated, a person can stop breathing multiple times throughout the night during sleep. With this interrupted sleep, this means that the brain and the rest of the body does not receive enough oxygen.

There are two types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea: This is caused by a blocked airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapse during sleep. This type of Sleep Apnea is the most common.
  • Central Sleep Apnea: This is not caused by a blocked airway, but it caused by the brain failing to signal muscles to breathe during sleep.

The most common signs and symptoms of obstructive and central sleep apneas include:

  • Excessive daytime drowsiness (hypersomnia)
  • Loud snoring
  • Observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep
  • Abrupt awakenings accompanied by shortness of breath
  • Dry mouth or sore throat when awakened
  • Headache in the morning
  • Difficulty staying asleep (insomnia)
